World Premiere of AMERICAN GOTHIC by Tennessee Williams - Lisa Tucker and Davis Robinson - photo by Josh Andrus

The Provincetown Tennessee Williams Theater Festival takes place annually the last full week in September. Proposals for programming are accepted year round by email. The Festival announces each year’s program around the first week of June.

Programming is organized around a theme. The 2017 theme is Tennessee Williams & Shakespeare. We will focus on aspects of these two playwrights that dissolve the borders between tragedy and farce. For 2018 the theme is Expectation. We begin with the image that led to Williams writing Streetcar: a woman sitting in a chair in moonlight, waiting for someone who never arrived.

We are most interested in presenting productions that have been performed elsewhere, especially productions of texts written by Tennessee Williams. We also present new works that respond to Williams' writing, are inspired by Williams' writing, or that further the annual theme. We present plays by other major writers that bear a relationship to Williams. We present work in English and in languages other than English.

Biographical plays about Tennessee Williams, including one-man shows, are of less interest to us. We have received many plays setting Blanche Dubois in New Orleans post Hurricane Katrina, many plays in which a Tennessee Williams heroine (Blanche, Alma, or his sister Rose) are locked inside asylums, and many plays set in hotel rooms on the last night of Tennessee Williams’ life.

We are especially interested in work that extends the echo and resonance of Williams' words to unexpected media. We welcome proposals from sculptors, painters, videographers, film-makers, choreographers and performance artists.

If you know excellent Williams productions to recommend to us, we'd like to hear about those. If you would like to propose something for the Provincetown Tennessee Williams Theater Festival to present, please e-mail the curator, David Kaplan
