Williams 101:
Everything You Wanted To Know
A lecture with film clips, music, special guests and a Q&A!
It's our pleasure to introduce you to Tennessee Williams: writer, lover, son, brother, amateur painter and America's great playwright.
In 60 minutes, we'll bring you up to speed on what Williams wrote and why, from smash hits on Broadway to outrages for the stage that were way ahead of their time. We'll tell you everything you ever wanted to know — but were afraid to ask — about his life and legacy, from his hometown in the Mississippi Delta, to St. Louis, New Orleans, Hollywood, New York and, of course, to Provincetown.
This lecture and conversation, presented by our curatorial staff and a rotating cast of festival artists and Williams Institute scholars, is the perfect overture to this year's theme: Tennessee Williams and Music.
Why is Williams work performed in Italy? In South Africa? When was he happiest? Most frightened? What happened to him after his last big hit, The Night of the Iguana? Did he like dogs? Did he like to swim? Did he like to dance? Did he like himself?
Ask questions and get answers! For instance... Q: did he really die choking on a bottle-cap? A: No.
See, you learned something already.
