Sweet!
The Magic Tower: In Williams’ 1930’s one-act dream of a happy marriage, a vaudeville headliner nicknamed the Duchess, retires from the stage to take on a new role as muse (and wife) to a starving young artist. Her love and her husband’s imagination turns the dross of tenement life into fairy-tale gold. As long as they don’t look out the window, their five-story walk-up remains the magic tower of the title. One stormy night, though, the artist goes off in the pelting rain to charm a rich art dealer. That’s when the Duchess hears a knock at her door and opens it reluctantly on her old vaudeville pals, now bound for Hollywood, tempting her to join them.
The Festival production of The Magic Tower comes from Republic of Cyprus, performed in English by a Cypriote ensemble. The homebound wife who once played the vaudeville circuit throughout America is now a former tambourine-shaker in a Cypriot taverna who has married and retired, for a while, from the restaurant’s orchestra. Directed by Marios Mettis , who performed in The Angel in the Alcove at TW Fest 2019.
