Teaching Streetcar in High School!

Dana Risley, an English Instructor at Lyceé International School of Boston, has been “waiting five years to see” Streetcar Named Desire. Ms. Risley and her 11th grade English students at last get to see A Streetcar at our 2022 Festival and we couldn’t be more excited! The Lyceé International School of Boston is an independent Pre-K-12 school located in Cambridge that teaches both American, French and International students.

Established in 1962, students can graduate with either a French Baccalaureate Degree or an International Baccalaureate Degree. Ms. Risley teaches English on the IB track, using Streetcar as a curriculum favorite.

This year, Ms. Risley’s class has read and examined Streetcar through the lenses of social organization, the evolution of women’s role in society, immigration, and the political state of America during the time of the play. The class also discussed how the setting of New Orleans, a vibrant and complex city, impacts the narrative. However, researching in a classroom and seeing a play performed are different matters entirely. Ms. Risley is excited for her class to get to experience something they’ve spent so many hours dissecting and discussing come to life.

There is, of course, nothing comparable to live theater. And it will be the liveliest theater. Abrahamse and Meyer, theatre makers from South Africa, have created a truly spectacular and memorable rendition of Streetcar.

We know Ms. Risley’s class will have an unforgettable experience, and so will you! Don’t forget to grab your tickets to A Streetcar Named Desire before it’s too late. This is not a show to be missed!
