Lazy, smug, willfully ignorant American critics reduced what Tennessee Williams wrote to psychology or concern for the oppressed.
Let’s take Williams at his word: in Boom!, Elizabeth Taylor IS a goddess, Noel Coward IS a vampire, Richard Burton IS the Angel of Death. None of this is symbolism: the film is a visionary myth, part of Williams’ lifelong effort to share a fantasy. The Festival’s entire September season of Sci-Fi Fantasy plays and stories by Williams is coded into this movie with beauty, with camp wit, and with courage. A vampire! A werewolf! The Angel of Death! A baby buggy from Mars! If the movie had come from Fellini it would have been acclaimed. Critics expecting the same old same old from a Williams film were angry at Boom!. Let’s enjoy it.
