Battle of Angels is the play that began Tennessee Williams' battle with censorship. Intended for Broadway after a Boston tryout, the play was instead shut down by Boston authorities who demanded, in part, that “all references to [the] deity and Christ,” and “to [the] stigmatae” on the hero’s hands be removed.
A production based on the uncensored text, directed by Jessica Burr for Blessed Unrest, will be part of the 2021 Festival in Provincetown, September 23-26, 2021.
