FLIGHT

adapted from a short story by Tennessee Williams

Directed by Jennifer Restak

@ Gifford House

Running time: 70 minutes

A drudging inventory clerk discovers a door that opens onto the roof of the tall building where he works.  Daily he goes through the door, taking a break from his job to watch the Mississippi River roll to the sea.  Secretly a poet, he dreams of escape.  The set-up is the same as in Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie: a clerk, a secret poet, up on the roof, dreams of escape.  In Williams’ famous play, the secret poet escapes by joining the merchant marines. In Flight, adapted from Williams’ story, “Episodes in the Life of a Clerk,” the secret poet jumps off the roof and, in his imagination, flies.

He remembered the way that the door had opened so easily, at the touch of his fingertips.
